How to get your NJ license
All beauty professionals in New Jersey are licensed by the State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling. Here's exactly what it takes — and how we guide you through every step.
Meet the requirements
Be at least 17 years old and have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
Complete your hours
Finish the required training hours for your program at our state-approved school. New Jersey does not allow apprenticeship in place of school.
Pass the state exams
Pass the written (theory) exam — computer-based, administered by ISO Quality Testing (IQT), with a minimum score of 75% — plus the practical exam.
Apply & get licensed
Submit your application, fees, photos and proof of hours to the Board to receive your license.
Renew every 2 years
Licenses renew biennially. New Jersey currently requires no continuing-education hours to renew.
